Drew Perry, associate professor of English, writes in his monthly column for Our State magazine about how "letting kids discover what's just over the horizon requires trust and faith, and yields the stewards of tomorrow."
Titled “Heirloom Earth,” the column includes a catalog of the adventures Perry, his wife Tita Ramirez (also an associate professor of English at Elon) and their children have had around the state — from jumping off of a boulder into the North Fork of the French Broad to standing in the waves at the coast.
From the column:
“We hoped, I guess, that we might raise you to do the same — to take your own dogs and kids, if you want them, out into the world. To wash their wounds. To teach them, in turn, to take care and become familiar. We wanted you, most of all, to remember. To understand what inheritance means. How to live here, in this place, this heirloom earth.”
