Elon’s chapter of the world’s largest HR professional society was recognized for its excellence and achievement during the 2017-18 academic year.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has awarded a 2017-18 Superior Merit designation to the Elon University SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members.
The SHRM student chapter merit award program, which began in 1972, was created to encourage student chapters to require ongoing excellence in the following areas: student chapter requirements, chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.
“As we move Together Forward, young professionals like these being honored at distinguished student chapters play a vital role in SHRM’s success,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and chief executive officer of SHRM. “I’m especially honored to thank this year’s award winners because they offer excellent evidence that SHRM’s future is indeed in good hands.”
“This is a testament to the leadership of our chapter and their collective dedication to the field of HR,” replied Associate Professor Brian Lyons, who serves as the chapter’s faculty mentor and advisor. “Considering this was an inactive chapter a few years ago, to receive our first-ever Superior Merit Award is quite an accomplishment.”
During the 2017-18 academic year, Elon’s chapter focused on developing relationships with local and professional communities as well as increasing engagement from its members. Initiatives, such as a social media launch, monthly newsletter, and an updated organization fair poster, helped to recruit and engage members. Chapter members also built relationships with guest speakers, ranging from current HR graduate students to chief human resource officers. The year culminated with the Alamance County Human Resources Association (ACHRA) breakfast workshop, where executive chapter members learned about employee benefit programs from local professionals.
“Elon SHRM aims to partner with other clubs and organizations in the coming year to provide new and valuable opportunities to its growing membership,” said Roxanna Wood ’19, Elon SHRM chapter president for 2018-19.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest HR professional society, representing 285,000 members in more than 165 countries. For nearly seven decades, the Society has been the leading provider of resources serving the needs of HR professionals and advancing the practice of human resource management. SHRM has more than 575 affiliated chapters within the United States and subsidiary offices in China, India and United Arab Emirates.
