Summer construction work pushes campus projects toward completion

A busy summer for construction crews means Elon University will be dedicating new residential, dining, academic and athletics facilities within the next several months.

Elon University’s campus has been busy with construction work this summer, as crews have worked to push to completion new residential, dining, academic and athletics facilities.

Here’s a look at the variety of projects around Elon’s campus that will be opening during the next several months:

Schar Center

Elon’s new 5,100-seat convocation center is located on North Williamson Avenue across from Rhodes Stadium and next to Hunt Softball Park. Schar Center will serve as the home for Phoenix basketball and volleyball programs and provide a venue for major campus events, such as convocations, concerts, graduation ceremonies and other activities.

The event level contains the arena court, two full-size practice courts, team locker rooms, locker rooms for coaches and officials, weight and training facilities, staff offices and a communications production suite. More information about the new facility and photos from throughout its construction are available at www.elon.edu/scharcenter.

The Elon volleyball team will host N.C. A&T State University on Aug. 28 in what will be the first athletic contest in the Schar Center. The women’s and men’s basketball teams will each host the University of North Carolina in November during the first home contest in Schar Center for both squads.

Richard W. Sankey Hall

This new academic building on the north end of the former McMichael Science Center parking lot is a 30,000-square-foot, three-story building with flexible classrooms and collaboration spaces that will be used by students in all majors.

It will be the home of cross-disciplinary centers of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, including the Doherty Center for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Chandler Family Professional Sales Center. The building will also include a design thinking center and a financial education center.

The building will open for use in August and a dedication is scheduled for November.

Koenigsberger Learning Center

In a major expansion of Carol Grotnes Belk Library, the new two-story, 11,000-square-foot KLC will bring together three student support programs: Academic Advising, Learning Assistance (formerly the tutoring program) and disabilities resources. The project has included the renovation of 5,000 square feet of the second floor of the library to become home to offices and testing rooms for Disability Resources and Learning Assistance. The center will promote powerful synergies among these academic programs and the many resources in the library.

The building will open for use in August and will be dedicated in September.

East Neighborhood

Located next to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Haggard Avenue, this new residential neighborhood will house more than 300 students. There are three three-story buildings, with lounges and community kitchens on every floor.

The neighborhood will house mostly first-year students, and there will be several living-learning communities with a theme of civic engagement and social innovation as well as first-year foundation courses linked with students living in these halls.

A new tennis clubhouse is adjacent to the residence halls and will support the Phoenix men’s and women’s Division I tennis programs. The clubhouse will provide office space for coaches, locker rooms, a training room and an exterior observation deck.

South Campus Recreation Center

The existing South Campus Gym on South Antioch Avenue has more than doubled in size with the addition of a new 15,000-square-foot facility that includes a multi-purpose court for basketball and other sports. This facility will be similar to the rec center in Danieley Neighborhood and will provide indoor activity space adjacent to the South Campus playing fields and Worsley Golf Training Center.

The multi-purpose floor can be used for sports including hockey, soccer, volleyball, badminton and basketball with built-in bleacher seating for 100 spectators.

McEwen Dining Hall Expansion

This major two-story expansion of the original 1956 building includes three retail dining establishments along with an inviting indoor dining engagement space and atrium and an outdoor patio area. The main floor meal plan stations will include Knead, a sandwich and pastry option; Home & Away, with home-style food offerings; and Greens & Grains, a soup and salad bar. Retail options will include Pei Wei, an Asian-inspired casual restaurant; and Village Juice Company, offering smoothies, salads, sandwiches and more.

The dining hall is expected to re-open by mid-fall.

Robotics Lab

Space in Duke Building vacated by Academic Advising and Disability Resources has been renovated to create a robotics lab and large teaching space for computer science and engineering classes.
