Curry's brothers, NBA superstar Stephen Curry and former Duke standout and Portland Trailblazers player Seth Curry, and their wives made the naming gift as a wedding present to their sister, who marries Damion Lee this weekend in Charlotte, N.C.
In a surprise announcement Tuesday night during Elon volleyball’s first home game in Schar Center, the team’s locker room in the new 5,100-seat arena will be named for former standout player Sydel Curry ’17.
Making the announcement were her brothers, NBA superstar Stephen Curry and former Duke standout and Portland Trailblazers player Seth Curry, and their wives. The naming gift came as a wedding present to Sydel Curry, who will marry Damion Lee in Charlotte, N.C., this coming weekend.
“I just want to say congratulations on getting married this weekend,” “We also want to congratulate you on an amazing career at Elon playing volleyball, all you did for the school and the program and wanted to give it back to you with the new locker room (named) for Sydel Curry. Enjoy it!”
Curry played three seasons at Elon after redshirting her first year at the university, and during the 2016 season led both her team and the Colonial Athletic Association in assists and assists per set while posting double-digit assists in all but two matches. She was named team MVP that year, and had planned to return for a final year of eligibility but stepped away from the game in February 2017 following an injury.
In announcing her retirement from the game, Curry posted on Facebook a thank you to “Elon University & my coaches for giving the opportunity to be a student-athlete. It has been the experience of a lifetime. I want to thank my teammates that I have had in the last 4 years that have made my college experience one that I would live all over again a thousand times.”
The announcement came as the team notched a fourth straight win to start the season, with a three-set sweep of N.C. A&T State University. The game attracted a program-record 1,465 fans.
