The commemoration will also include viewings of "United 93," a film about the hijacked plane that crashed in rural Pennsylvania during the terrorist attacks, in LaRose Theatre on Sept. 11.
The Elon University community will mark the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon with a display of flags, the ringing of bells and a showing of “United 93” in LaRose Theatre.
The Student Government Association has invited students, faculty and staff to donate a minimum of $1 to sponsor small American flags that will be placed on Young Commons, with the proceeds to be donated to the World Trade Center victim fund, benefiting those who are affected by the tragedy that took place. In the past, proceeds have supported the 9/11 Memorial, which sits in the footprint of the World Trade Center. During its first four years, the SGA fundraiser has generated hundreds of dollars for the 9/11 Memorial.
On Monday, Sept. 10, up to 1,000 small American flags will be placed on Young Commons to pay tribute to those killed in the attacks, with larger international flags also placed around the area to represent the countries of those killed in the attacks. The carillon in Alamance Building will also be rung four times on Monday morning at the times of the attack on each of the two World Trade Center towers (8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m.), at the time of the attack on the Pentagon (9:37 a.m.) and at the time of the time of the crash of United 93, the highjacked plane that crashed in rural Pennsylvania during the attacks (10:07 a.m.).
The campus community will also pay tribute with a moment of silence during Tuesday morning’s College Coffee.
At 7 and 9 p.m. on Monday night, the Elon Community is invited to showings of “United 93,” hosted by East Neighborhood in LaRose Theatre to honor the lives of those lost in the attack.
The Student Government Association will be in Moseley Center on Friday, Monday and Tuesday accepting donations in the form of Phoenix Cash, Cash and credit cards.
