Common Reading lecture, Call to Honor rescheduled

Elon University has rescheduled the Common Reading Lecture and its annual Call to Honor ceremony, both events that were postponed due to Hurricane Florence. 

The Common Reading Lecture will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Gym. Kristen Green, the author of “Something Must Be Done about Prince Edward County: A Family, a Virginia Town, a Civil Rights Battle,” will speak about her book and the historical events behind it. The work examines the decision by the School Board of Prince Edward County in Virginia to end public education for children of the county in the wake of the Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation decision and instead use public funds to set up a “private” school for white kids only. 

First-year students are expected to attend. Tickets that have already been issued for this event can still be used for the new date. Tickets are still available at the Center for the Arts Box Office. For information, call (336) 278-5610. 

Elon will celebrate its annual Call to Honor on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 9:40 a.m. in Alumni Gym. The annual celebration focuses on the values that make up the Elon Honor Code — honesty, integrity, responsibility and respect. 

First-year students are required to attend and the ceremony is open to the entire Elon community as well.
