CEL well-represented at ISSOTL 2018

Several Elon Center for Engaged Learning representatives presented at the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) 2018 conference, including scholars from multiple CEL research seminars.

Those who collaborated on a panel on Cultivating a Culture of Learning: Mentoring Undergraduate Research in Global Contexts. Elon presenters included:

• Maureen Vandermaas‐Peeler (Psychology and Center for Research on Global Engagement)
• Eric Hall (Exercise Science)
• Amy Allocco (Religious Studies)
• Brian Pennington (Religious Studies and Center for the Study of Religion, Culture, and Society)

Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler and Eric Hall both represented the 2014-2016 CEL research seminar on Mentoring Undergraduate Research.

Eric Hall, who is also CEL’s Senior Scholar, presented a paper with other members of the 2014-2016 research seminar on Mentoring Undergraduate Research, including Helen Walkington (Oxford Brookes University, United Kingdom), Jenny Shanahan (Bridgewater State University), Elizabeth Ackley (Roanoke College), and Kearsley Stewart (Duke University). The paper was titled, Salient Practices of Award‐Winning Undergraduate Research Mentors: Excellence, Freedom and Control.

Amanda Sturgill, associate professor of communications and member of the 2015-2017 CEL research seminar on Integrating Global Learning within the University Experience, presented a poster titled: SoTL and the Career Path: Academic Culture Issues Within and Across Institutions.

Members of the 2016-2018 research seminar on Faculty Change hosted a panel on What Encourages Academic Staff to Engage in Systematic, Sustained Change in Teaching Practices? The panel included Jessie L. Moore and Peter Felten (CEL), and Deandra Little (CATL) from Elon. Representatives from other institutions included Katarina Mårtensson and Torgny Roxå (Lund University, Sweden), Kathryn Sutherland (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), David Green (Seattle University), and Elizabeth Marquis (McMaster University, Canada).

Caroline Ketcham (Exercise Science) and Jillian Kinzie (Indiana University) represented their work with Tony Weaver (Sport Management) on CEL’s 2018-2010 research seminar on Capstone Experiences, presenting a poster on The Changing Landscape of Capstone Experiences: Diverse Needs of Students and Institution Types.

CEL team members also presented on other topics at the conference. Peter Felten, executive director of the Center for Engaged Learning, presented:
