Elon students woke up Sunday to a snow-covered campus as a winter storm passes through the area. By 3 p.m., an estimated 10 inches of snow had blanketed the campus, according to a measuring taken on South Campus.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated that a Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. Heavy accumulations of snow are expected through this evening. Some sleet and freezing rain may mix with the snow this afternoon. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches are expected, with an additional tenth to two tenths of an inch of freezing rain also expected. The heaviest precipitation is expected to occur through late afternoon.
According to the NWS, hazardous travel conditions are expected to continue into Monday. In addition, there is the likelihood of power outages from the significant accumulations of heavy wet snow and ice.
Physical Plant crews have been out since 5 a.m. trying to clear main areas of campus and that work will continue throughout the day. Students are reminded there will continue to be slippery spots on campus, so proper footwear and winter clothing are advised when walking around campus. Students are strongly advised not to attempt to travel by vehicle.
While undergraduate final exams scheduled for Monday have been postponed for Tuesday, students can still enjoy the beauty of the campus covered in snow.
