Elon Community Service Officer Kenneth Herron died at his home in Elon on July 29 after a long battle with cancer. He began as a part-time member of the Elon Campus Safety and Police staff in 2000 and moved to full-time work in 2015.
Ken graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1980 and went to Officer Candidate School with the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany, California and Panama. Ken left the military as a Major in 1993 and served 20 years as a Probation Parole Officer with Alamance County.
Ken is survived by his wife, Monica; his two children, Alex (Mike) McGovern and Connor (Michele) Herron; two grandchildren, Joseph and Wren McGovern; his mother, Doris Herron; his brother, Keith (Betsy) Herron; and his aunt, Jeannette.
His family will hold a “Celebration of His Life” from 6-9 p.m., August 17, at Ken’s home at 104 Arbor Dr. Elon, NC 27244. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Freedom Service Dogs of America, 7193 S. Dillion Ct. Englewood, CO 80112.
