The university is partnering with the Burlington Times-News and the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce to host a forum for candidates in the race for seats on the Alamance County Board of Commissioners.
Elon University, in partnership with the Burlington Times-News and Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce, will host the Alamance County Commission Candidate Forum on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in McKinnon Hall in the Moseley Center.
Each of the 12 Democratic and Republican candidates for the county commission have been invited to the forum, which will allow each to address topics important to the public as Alamance County’s March 3 primary election approaches.
The five invited Democratic candidates include Bob Byrd, Dreama Caldwell, Anthony Pierce, Kristen Powers and Henry Vines.
The seven Republican candidates invited to participate in the forum include Jim Johnson, James Kirkpatrick, Bill Lashley, John Paisley, Jr., David Michael Spruill, Pamela Tyler Thompson and Blake Williams.
Questions posed during the forum will address key issues facing Alamance County and will be presented by independent, non-partisan moderator Carrie Eaves, assistant professor of political science and Faculty Fellow for Civic Engagement. Eaves will attempt to give each candidate equal opportunity to present their views.
The university does not support or oppose any particular candidate for office, and no signs or political fundraising is permitted at the event.
The forum will be followed by a reception during which candidates and guests can enjoy light refreshments and continue discussions about the forum and the election.
Visitors to the Alamance County Commission Candidate Forum can park across the street from the Moseley Center in the McMichael Science Center parking lot on North O’Kelly Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.
The event will be live-streamed on the student-run Elon News Network’s Facebook page and will also be broadcast on WSOE 89.3 FM, Elon’s student-run radio station.
