Associate Professor of Journalism Amanda Sturgill offered insight for the story that focused on social media and its role in the security of U.S. elections.
Associate Professor of Journalism Amanda Sturgill was featured in a report by FOX 8 WGHP on social media and U.S. election security.
The report, “Election security concerns remain on nation’s mind in wake of 2016 Russian interference,” focuses on how foreign actors have used social media to sew doubt about the election process and candidates into the minds of voters. Reporter Bob Buckley discusses a report by the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee that weighs the impact of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, as well as the roles of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms in spreading mistrust among voters.
In the story, Sturgill offers advice about using social media to stay informed, including paying close attention to the legitimacy of online sources and even finding new sources of information all together.
“The moral of the story is that we need to not just get our information from social media. We need to talk to one another,” Sturgill told WGHP.
