The senior mathematics major presented her honors research on using mathematical voronoi models to district school zones in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school (CMS) system.
Although the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Southeastern Sectional Conference, scheduled to be held at Highpoint University from March 12-14, was cancelled, mathematics major Kylee Gomilla was accepted into a special session on Mathematics in Democracy that took their presentations online.
On March 14, Kylee Gomilla presented her honors research on using mathematical voronoi models to district school zones in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school (CMS) system.
This work integrates Gomilla’s love for mathematics and education as she looks for ways to district that impact success factors such as commuting distance, overpopulation in schools, and poverty rate. Gomilla intends to continue to share her work with both the mathematical community and CMS in order to make strides towards more equitable school zoning in the future.
