The communication design major is the School of Communications’ seventh LAGRANT scholar in the last four years.
Mikayla Ford ’22, a communication design major, was named a recipient of a 2020 LAGRANT Foundation scholarship, which supports ethnic minority communications students. The rising junior is the School of Communications’ seventh LAGRANT scholar in the last four years.
Ford was among 41 undergraduate students nationwide to receive the prestigious scholarship, worth $2,500. Other universities with undergraduate recipients included Brigham Young University, Savannah College of Art & Design, University of Oregon, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Washington.
This summer, Ford is working remotely for Procter & Gamble Company, creating graphics and motion design assets for the multinational consumer goods corporation.
“Even though we’re all working in this digital environment The LAGRANT Foundation has done a great job connecting with students and giving us the opportunity to connect with each other virtually,” Ford said. “These meetups have already helped us expand our networks.”
Ford was initially driven to apply for the scholarship by a fellow Elon communications student, who encouraged her to apply because of her passion for advertising.
The rising junior is thankful for her experience with The LAGRANT Foundation, which has helped to solidify her professional aspirations.
“My experience with The LAGRANT Foundation has been amazing,” Ford said. “A large part of why I have the internship I do now is because of the support the foundation gave me even before I was a scholarship recipient. TLF really just wants to help students succeed. Now that I’m a part of the foundation, I have no doubt that it will continue to help me with my professional aspirations through professional development and networking events.”
In 2019, Elon students Arianne Payne ’20 and Maggie Cornejo ’21 were among the 39 undergraduate students to receive LAGRANT scholarships. The previous year, Elon alumna Gabrielle Beamon ’19, Ozelle Bower ’19, Anissa Cooper ’19 and Janay Tyson ’19 all received undergraduate scholarships, tying Elon for the most undergraduate recipients nationally.
