The student chapter of the world’s largest HR association received recognition for its excellence and achievement during the 2019-2020 academic year.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) awarded a 2019-2020 Merit Award designation to the SHRM Elon student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.
The SHRM student chapter merit award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and distinguishes outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession, and SHRM engagement.
“Today’s members of our student chapters are the HR leaders of tomorrow. They are the movers and shakers of the future, and we cannot understate the vital role they play in SHRM’s success,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM president and CEO. “The Elon University chapter is evidence that the future of HR is, indeed, in good hands. I applaud their accomplishments and ability to fiercely move forward during a time of such change and uncertainty in the workplace.”
During the 2019-2020 academic year, Elon’s chapter hosted speakers who touched on topics ranging from resume writing and interviewing to various career paths in HR and how to build a network. Members were also given the opportunity to participate in a collegiate HR case competition, as well as hear from a panel of seniors about navigating internships and their experiences preparing for SHRM certification exams.
“The network of mentors and friends that I’ve developed through SHRM has helped me find internship opportunities, taught me so much about the professional world, and given me insights into where I’d like to take my career after graduation and beyond,” said Alyssa Keller ’21, president of SHRM Elon.
The chapter is advised by Brian Lyons, associate professor of management.
