Elon University is presenting a virtual performance by the 11-piece ensemble Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra on Thursday, Sept. 24, as part of its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
A thrilling salsa group, Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra has infused the traditional salsa form with a completely modern identity. Every note played is meant for dancing, so set the laptop or cell phone down, stand up and move. Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra has found an audience among new and classic salsa lovers, quickly becoming one of the most popular bands in New York City.
Leading up to the performance, Megan Muller ’21 with the Office of Cultural and Special Programs and Sylvia Munoz, associate director of the CREDE and director of El Centro, caught up with orchestra director Gianni Mano to talk about their music and their approach to their performances.
“This is really dance music,” Mano said during the interview. “There are no salsa songs that are for concerts where you sit down and watch a string quartet. Everything is about getting up to dance. We try to be very encouraging of that, especially for those who know nothing about the music.”
Thursday’s performance is pre-recorded and will be available here at 5 p.m.
