As students prepare to return to campus, the National Weather Service is predicting a mix of rain and snow for late Thursday through Friday.
UPDATE, 6 A.M., FRIDAY, JANUARY 8: Elon will operate on a normal schedule today. Further updates will be issued as necessary.
The Elon campus is included in a Winter Weather Advisory, with rain and snow expected throughout the day on Friday, Jan. 8. Up to two inches of heavy, wet slushy snow may fall along and north of the I-85 corridor through the Piedmont region. The track of the low pressure system, how far it remains to our south, and the amount of cold air that can move into our area will ultimately determine where the snow/rain line occurs and how much snow accumulation is possible.
A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and rain will overspread the Advisory area late Thursday through Friday morning, with a few hour period of all snow possible Friday morning. The precipitation will likely turn to a cold rain during the midday and afternoon hours, before changing back to snow Friday evening and early Friday night. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with isolated areas receiving 3 inches.
Physical Plant staff have been preparing for any possible impacts of the weather, and university officials are carefully monitoring the forecast. At this time we do not anticipate the forecasted weather will require any change to the schedule or operations of the university. Law school classes are currently in session virtually this week and will continue as scheduled. Health sciences classes are also planned to continue as scheduled.
Staff members who are concerned about difficulties traveling to campus should communicate directly with their supervisors.
Students traveling to campus should monitor weather forecasts and watch the Today at Elon website for updates.
