Boaz Avraham-Katz to participate in Hillel International’s Masterclass: Israel fellowship

Avraham-Katz will bring innovative approaches to Israel education back to campus.

Boaz Avraham-Katz, Hebrew professor and Jewish Life Engagement Liaison, has been accepted into Hillel International’s acclaimed “Masterclass: Israel,” an educational fellowship exploring the biggest questions facing Israel today and how to traverse them with students.

As part of the program, Avraham-Katz will take a deep dive into the society and politics of modern-day Israel, and bring back tools to reimagine and reinvigorate the educational approach to Israel at Elon Hillel.

Using a unique pedagogy for Israel education, fellows examine the values animating Israeli and Palestinian culture and society while cultivating the craft of their teaching. Fellows will also learn to actively invite competing narratives into the room and contextualize them within the landscapes of Israeli and Palestinian society.

“I am thrilled and honored to be participating in this prestigious program,” said Avraham-Katz. “As a lifelong Jewish educator and scholar of Israeli culture and politics, I am excited to bring new and innovative approaches to Israel back to Elon Hillel, and our campus as a whole.”

This highly selective fellowship invests in small cohorts of up to 20 fellows committed to a deep dive into pressing questions about Israel’s historical, political, and cultural landscape. Fellows learn the nuances of educational pedagogy and praxis, and delve into how to elevate the student experience through holistic, experiential learning.

“Boaz already brings innovation and curiosity to his work with Hillel, and I am excited about the new opportunities that participation in this program will bring,” shared Director of Jewish Life, Betsy Polk. “I can’t wait to see how this enhances our Israel programming.”

Avraham-Katz will participate in the program throughout the 2020-21 academic year.
