Buchanan presents paper at American Educational Research Association

Associate professor of education, Lisa Buchanan, presented a paper at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) as part of a larger study of preservice teachers' use of documentary film to learn about immigrant and refugee experiences.

During the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, Lisa Buchanan, associate professor of education, presented a paper that is part of a larger study of preservice teachers’ use of documentary film to learn about immigrant and refugee experiences.

In this study, preservice teachers viewed clips from three documentary films that presented counterstories of contemporary immigrants and refugees. Their focus in the study was how preservice teachers analyzed the three films. Specifically, they examined how elementary, middle grades, and secondary preservice teachers analyzed, both from a cognitive and affective stance, clips of documentary films about the difficult topic of contemporary immigration.

Three documentaries were used in the study: Documented (Vargas, 2013), Underwater Dreams (Mazzio, 2014), and Refugee (Malpas & Knott, 2016).
