Porter, vice chair of the Elon University Board of Trustees, will be offering personal finance lessons to students during the event in LaRose Digital Theater.
Elon University students are invited to a session on personal finance led by Elon Trustee Dave Porter P’11 P’19 at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, in the LaRose Digital Theater in the Koury Business Center.
Porter is the owner and managing partner of Baystate Financial, a financial planning firm with more than 300 advisors and 16 major offices throughout New England. During the Oct. 21 event, he will share lessons on personal finance that can benefit students of all backgrounds and majors as they look to their future beyond Elon. The event is sponsored by Elon’s Center for Financial Literacy, which seeks to provide objective, high-quality resources to assist individuals in making personal financial decisions.
Porter began his career in the insurance industry in Philadelphia and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1992 to operate his first agency. In 1996 he relocated to Boston where he was named managing partner of Baystate Financial, overseeing 49 advisors at the time.
Under Porter’s guidance, Baystate Financial has been recognized as one of Boston’s top places to work in both The Boston Globe and the Boston Business Journal. In 2011, he was recognized as one of three ‘Most Admired CEOs’ by the Boston Business Journal. Porter has been an international speaker presenting on building financial services organizations and the convergence of banks, CPAs, insurance, and investment groups. In 2013 he authored “Where Winners Live” about accountability in the financial services industry and has sold over 45,000 copies.
In 2011, Porter endowed the Porter Family Professional Development Center at Elon, which provides resources to assist students in preparing for and acquiring internships, full-time employment or graduate school placement after graduation.
The Oct. 21 event will include a question-and-answer session and will be followed by refreshments.
