Cheek has twice been named CAA Football's Offensive Player of the Week.
Senior Elon University quarterback Davis Cheek has been named the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Elon’s 24-10 win over New Hampshire on Saturday.
Cheek went 27-of-31 passing for 328 yards in the victory, having a hand in all three of Elon’s touchdowns. He threw a 58-yard touchdown on the second play of the game and added an 18-yard third quarter scoring strike. In the second quarter, he capped a 10-play, 86-yard drive with a three-yard plunge that put Elon ahead for good.
After an early interception that allowed New Hampshire to build a 10-7 lead, Cheek completed 20 of his next 21 passes, including 17 in a row at one point, that helped Elon close the game with 17 unanswered points. He was a perfect 13-of-13 in the second quarter.
Cheek’s 87.1 completion percentage is the fourth-best single-game performance in FCS this season and it was his fourth 300-yard passing game of the season. Over the past two games, Cheek has twice been named CAA Football’s Offensive Player of the Week, combining to go 56-of-68 for 660 yards and seven total touchdowns (five passing and two rushing).
Cheek is among the national leaders in most quarterback statistical categories, including completion percentage (No. 8 at 66.3 percent), completions per game (No. 9 at 26.1 per contest), passing yards per game (No. 12 at 292.4 per contest), total offense per game (No. 13 at 304.6 per contest), passing touchdowns (No. 22 with 13), and passing efficiency (No. 26 at 142.0).
Elon has won three consecutive games and improved to 4-3 overall, as well as 3-1 in CAA Football play. The Phoenix is one of three teams with just one loss in CAA Football action, chasing undefeated Villanova at the top of the standings. Elon will head to Harrisonburg, Virginia this weekend to face No. 5 James Madison at 2:00 p.m.
