Led by Associate Professor Hal Walker, the service-learning class coordinated an October fundraiser to support the Burlington-based nonprofit organization.
This fall’s Event Management class, a service-learning course led by Associate Professor Hal Walker, coordinated a fundraiser in late October to benefit Feed The Hunger. The Burlington-based nonprofit organization supports children in communities who are at risk of starvation or malnutrition, and invests in their success.
As part of the Sport Management Department’s class, students planned and managed several field events to support the nonprofit organization that equips vulnerable children with nutritious meals, Bibles and school supplies.
The class recruited participants for two events – one that focused on coordinating teams of eight and the other, teams of two, to compete in four activities: Kan Jam, spikeball, corn hole and a chipping contest. Winning teams earned cash prizes, gift cards and various prizes that were donated by local restaurants and businesses.
Approximately 50 attendees participated in the events, titled “The Hunger Gamez,” and a $2,687 donation was made to Feed The Hunger. The class also volunteered for a “Packathon,” with the entire class of 27 students compiling food packets that Feed The Hunger will distribute nationally and internationally.
Walker and the students acknowledged the great support they received from Scott Hahn, Feed The Hunger’s chief operations officer, who assisted with the class project. Hahn, an Elon alumnus, led the food packing activity at the organization’s Holly Hill Mall location.
The class was also supported by the Kernodle Center for Civic Life and its Community Partnership Initiative Grant, and thanked Bob Frigo and Nicole Bergen for their guidance throughout the project.
