Damion Blake, associate professor of political science and policy studies at Elon University, spoke with Reuters about the trial of 33 alleged Jamaican gang members which tests recent judicial reforms in the country designed to fight powerful criminal groups that are partly responsible for Jamaica’s high murder rate.
Drawing from his experience as a security consultant to the Jamaican government, Blake said, “The trial is crucial in sending a message to the Jamaican criminal underworld that the state is serious about restoring peace in violence-prone communities. It also helps in rebuilding the bonds of trust between citizens and the Jamaican state.”
