Leandra Lorenz was named the CAA Most Outstanding Track Performer after the redshirt sophomore won two event titles in the 1,500-meters and the 5,000-meters.
The Elon University women’s track and field team won its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association team title as the Phoenix put up 195 points on the final day at the CAA Outdoor Championship on Saturday, May 7, at the Solomon Outdoor Track IN Dedham, Massachusetts.
Elon recorded its most points at a league meet since 2016 while winning its fourth CAA title in the past eight seasons. The Phoenix also accomplished the feat of sweeping the CAA women’s cross country and women’s track and field team championships for the second straight year.
Leandra Lorenz was named the CAA Most Outstanding Track Performer after the redshirt sophomore won two event titles in the 1,500-meters and the 5,000-meters.
Overall, the Phoenix had six event champions in Lorenz (1,500-meters, 5,000-meters), Maria Ahm (10,000-meters), Alyssa Sandy (100-meter hurdles), Stephanie Lair (800-meters) and the Phoenix 4×400-meter relay team.
Lorenz won the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:35.72 for her first gold medal of the day. Anna Twomey was the runner-up in the race with her time of 4:35.94 while Jette Beermann was fifth with a time of 4:40.84.
In the 5,000-meters, Lorenz earned her second event title of the meet as she crossed the line with a time of 16:37.68. Maria Ahm was third overall with a time of 16:44.19 while Maggie Springer was fourth at a time of 16:45.56.
Lair won gold in the 800-meters after racing a time of 2:11.65. Twomey was third overall at her time of 2:12.57 for her second All-CAA honor.
Sandy won the 100-meter hurdles after clocking a time of 13.83. Teammate Jordan Haywood was fifth with her time of 15.19.
The maroon and gold captured its final event title of the meet in the 4×400-meter relay. The Phoenix foursome of Aliya Barrows, Tessa DiPierdomenico, Meghan Wilcox and Piper Jons posted a winning time of 3:45.31.
Wilcox earned All-CAA honors in the 100-meters as the freshman finished third overall with a time of 11.92. She was fourth overall in the 200-meters with her time of 24.64 while Jons also scored for the Phoenix with her time of 24.77 in the race.
Jons was the runner-up in the 400-meters as the sophomore clocked a time of 54.48. Barrows was sixth in the race with her time of 57.08.
Hannah Miller was second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:44.42. Hannah Preeo was sixth with a time of 11:00.67.
Elon received a third-place standing in the 4×100-meter relay as the quartet of Wilcox, Sandy, Jons and Haywood ran the second-fastest time in school history at 46.39.
Lauryn Carlton received All-CAA honors in the shot put as the junior threw a mark of 13.75m, a new outdoor personal-best. Carlton also led the Phoenix in the discus throw with a heave of 43.31m while teammate Kaitlin McGoogan was sixth at her mark of 43.11m.
Hollie Thurgood took third in the heptathlon as the sophomore scored 4,296 points, the third-best performance in school history.
