The top Colonial Athletics Association softball teams are competing at Hunt Softball Park in the conference tournament, with the championship game slated for Saturday.
The Colonial Athletic Association will crown a new women’s softball conference champion on Saturday, May 14, in Elon’s Hunt Softball Park, with Elon among the top teams competing for the championship.
The CAA Softball Championship presented by Primis kicked off play on Thursday, with Elon winning its initial game against College of Charleston and then dropping a close game to top-seeded University of Delaware Thursday night. Elon squares off again against College of Charleston at noon on Friday.
The championship game is scheduled for noon on Saturday, or at 2:30 p.m., if necessary in the five-team, double-elimination tournament.
The softball tournament is one of five CAA championships Elon is hosting this academic year. Elon’s Jimmy Powell Tennis Center hosted matches for the men’s and women’s tennis tournaments in April, and the CAA women’s soccer semifinals and championship matches were held at Elon’s Rudd Field.
Elon’s Latham Park will welcome teams for the CAA baseball tournament May 25-29.
Elon entered the CAA softball tournament as the fourth seed, making its fifth appearance at the CAA Softball Championships. Three team members earned All-CAA postseason honors on Wednesday, with senior outfielder Rebecca Murray receiving first team All-CAA laurels, sophomore Gabi Schaal named to the second team, and pitcher Taylor Cherry placed on the league’s All-Rookie Team.
The Phoenix headed into the league championships with a 27-20 record overall and a 10-8 record in conference play.
