Among many duties of the position, Overman will oversee research, pursue external grants and assist with the implementation of the Boldly Elon strategic plan
Amy Overman, assistant dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of psychology will be Elon University’s assistant provost for scholarship and creative activity.
In the assistant provost position, Overman will serve as Elon’s chief research officer, continue an active research agenda that models the integration of student-researchers, actively pursue and facilitate the pursuit of external grants, assist the provost and vice president of academic affairs with issues related to strategic planning, and support academic linkages across the university.
Overman will also provide leadership in areas that include the Faculty Research and Development Committee, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Post-Probationary Faculty Development Reassigned-time Committee, Graduate Council, the Institutional Review Board, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and faculty productivity, start-up awards and intellectual property.
She will begin in the role Jan. 2.
“Dr. Overman brings to the role a wealth of applicable faculty and administrative leadership experience, including service as Assistant Dean of Elon College, Associate Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, Chair of the Faculty Research and Development Committee, and member of the Long Range Planning Committee,” said Tim Peeples, interim vice president for academic affairs and senior associate provost, and Raghu Tadepalli, interim provost and dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, in an email announcing her selection.
“In addition to being a highly active and effective scholar and mentor, she has been consistently active with external grant activity, including obtaining the first NIH grant to Elon and serving as a reviewer for both NIH and NSF. Her leadership activity and experience extend beyond Elon, including her current role as the State Chair for the North Carolina ACE Women’s Network” and past roles as a Southern Association of Colleges and Schools lead evaluator for a Quality Enhancement Plans, and a SACSCOC On-Site Reaffirmation Committee member.
Overman was selected for the position from among a strong group of internal finalists.
“I am honored to serve in this new way and to help support all of the various forms of creative activity and scholarship that are carried out at Elon,” Overman said.
The new assistant provost position was approved in spring 2022 by President Connie Ledoux Book and former Provost Aswani Volety to accomplish goals in the Boldly Elon strategic plan related to faculty development and scholarship. The search began in August.
