The recent article by the national news outlet highlights Stirred Stories, the publishing company started by Kelsea Johnson '17 and Kyle Porro '17 that seeks to elevate marginalized voices.
As co-founders of the publishing company Stirred Stories, Elon alumni Kelsea Johnson and Kyle Porro seek to lift up the stories told by marginalized voices.
Now The Washington Post is lifting up the mission of Stirred Stories.
A recent article by Washington Post reporter Ellie Silverman highlights Johnson and her work with Stirred Stories to “prioritize diversity and representation in every step of turning their authors’ stories into books.” Johnson and Porro, both members of Elon’s Class of 2017, launched Stirred Stories in 2019 and a year later released their first book, “The Grocery Game,” which was penned by fellow classmate Tori Murphy and her grandmother, Theodora Smiley Lacey.
Stirred Stories has now published four books with another five in the works, according to the Washington Post article, and operates under the slogan of “publishing for a better tomorrow.”
“The intersection of being a Black person, and a woman really gives me an investment in marginalized communities and having our voices heard at mainstream levels,” Johnson told The Washington Post. “We’re really excited to not just tell these marginalized stories, but to make them as authentic as possible.”
Johnson explains that Stirred Stories offers a curriculum for each of its books to help guide families, children and educators through the process of discussing the topics addressed by the books.
