The work will require a portion of East Haggard Avenue through Elon’s campus to be closed to vehicular traffic on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 15 through Dec. 6.
East Haggard Avenue from North Williamson Avenue to North Antioch Avenue will be closed for three weeks beginning Wednesday, Nov. 15, for work to improve the Town of Elon’s water system. A portion of North O’Kelly Avenue north of East Haggard Avenue will be closed as well.
The closure will be in place on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. with a detour in place directing traffic around the work area. Outside of those work hours, all roadways will be open for normal operation. The work is expected to conclude Wednesday, Dec. 6.
Most portions of the sidewalks and crosswalks along East Haggard Avenue and North O’Kelly Avenue will remain open to the public throughout the project. If a portion of a sidewalk or crosswalk needs to be closed, detour signs will be installed for pedestrians to navigate the closed areas.
The university will implement alternate Elon Express routes during the closure to accommodate the changes to traffic flow. Visit the Elon Express website to view the alternate routes.
The closure is part of a larger water system project being undertaken by the Town of Elon focused on improvements along East Haggard Avenue between North O’Kelly Avenue and Gilliam Road. Additional East Haggard Avenue closures will be announced as this first phase nears completion.
Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use caution and remain alert as they navigate these changes.
