A team of faculty from Elon, Drexel, University of Delaware, and UNC Wilmington shared the outcomes of their collective work at the 2024 North Carolina Campus Engagement PACE conference
For the past two years, a team of faculty from Elon, Drexel, University of Delaware and UNC Wilmington have been collaborating on ongoing multi-institutional efforts to prepare students and universities to better incorporate current and emerging best practices in community-based learning into their academic and cocurricular programming. This group has been convened and funded through a $40,000 IN/CO grant from the CAA Academic Alliance, with Mathew Gendle, director of Project Pericles and professor of psychology, serving as principal investigator.
On Feb. 14, several of the outcomes of this grant were shared via multiple presentations at the 2024 North Carolina Campus Engagement Pathways to Achieving Civic Engagement (PACE) conference hosted by Guilford College. The grant team’s presentations included conversations regarding best practices for faculty development in community engagement (James DeVita and Alexia Frazidis, UNCW), sustaining and supporting a community-engaged faculty fellows program (Andrew Zitcer and Ayana Allen-Handy, Drexel), the creation and implementation of a new definitional framework for community engagement (Allison Karpyn and Leann Moore, University of Delaware), and the development of a novel comprehensive measure to assess community-based learning programs (Mathew Gendle and Amanda Tapler, Elon).
