Students from Elon University's Martha and Spencer Love School of Business showcased their financial analysis acumen against other North Carolina universities in a bid for regional competition spots.
Five Elon University students showcased their prowess in blending academic theory with practical financial analysis through an annual competition hosted locally by CFA Society North Carolina.
Seniors Bennett Curtis, Ally Hogan, Nick Morello, Karsen Williams, and Owen Clendenin placed at the statewide level of the 2024 CFA Institute Research Challenge.
Four universities competed on Feb. 24, 2024, for the opportunity to advance to a regional contest. The competition tasks students with applying their classroom knowledge and teamwork skills in evaluating a publicly traded company.
Guided by Associate Professor Raj Gupta Elon’s team competed against students from Appalachian State University, UNC Wilmington and UNC Greensboro.
“This was an opportunity to put our collective knowledge to the test and represent Elon in a competitive environment,” said Curtis, a finance major from Arlington, Va. “Dividing the workload and meeting regularly helped us maintain cohesion and focus.”
Elon’s participants said they considered their experience a significant milestone on their career paths. In valuing Nucor Corporation, the competition provided valuable hands-on equity analysis experience and interaction with financial industry leaders.
“It’s a rare chance to gain insights from industry experts and hone skills critical for our future careers,” said Morello, a finance and business analytics double major from Yorktown Heights, N.Y. “The competition is an opportunity to challenge yourself, go in front of professionals in the field, and it looks great on your resume.”
