New members of the nation's oldest multidisciplinary honor society for academic excellence and service were installed in an April 23 ceremony.
Ninety students, faculty, staff and an alumnus were inducted into the Elon University Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest multidisciplinary honor society dedicated to academic excellence and service, at a ceremony on April 23.
Added to the chapter’s roster were 79 undergraduates, four graduate students, one alumnus and six members of faculty and staff.
The keynote address was delivered by Wendell McKenzie, former Phi Kappa Phi Southern Regional Vice President and a professor emeritus of biology at N.C. State University. McKenzie installed Elon’s Chapter 275 in November 1995. Angela Lewellyn, senior associate dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Shereen Elgamal, senior lecturer in Arabic studies and past chapter president, also gave remarks.
Elon alumnus Ira “Ike” O. Credle ’83 was inducted into the chapter following a career of service in military, civilian and ministerial roles. Credle served in the U.S. Army for 20 years in a variety of assignments, including in the Pentagon’s intelligence office, until retiring in 2003. He then served as a Department of the Army civilian and was a senior training specialist at the 1st Information Operations Command, in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He retired from federal service in 2023 and is active in his church, New Chapel Baptist Church in Camp Springs, Maryland. Credle earned a master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University and a Doctor of Education in organizational leadership with an emphasis in Christian ministry from Grand Canyon University.
Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and largest multidisciplinary academic honor society whose mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.” Each year, chapters may invite the upper 7.5% of the junior class and upper 10% of the senior and graduate classes.
Since its founding, more than 1 million members have been initiated in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
