The Elon University Department of Athletics celebrated the 2023-24 school year with the Phoenix Awards on Monday, May 13, in Schar Center. The department recognized and remembered the many outstanding achievements from the past year.
Both team and department awards were handed out. Caleb Curtain of the Elon football team and Jette Beermann of the Phoenix women’s cross country and track and field team received the prestigious Stein H. Basnight Award for the top Male and Female Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Curtain earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording 11 tackles and a sack in our 14-6 win over No. 5 William & Mary. He went on to lead Elon in tackles and interceptions, being recognized as Second Team All-American by FCS Stats Perform, the Associated Press, the AFCA and Phil Steele. A First Team All-CAA performer, Curtain finished the season with two fumbles recovered, six pass break-ups, 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Beermann capped off her dominant racing year by capturing both the 10,000 meters and the 5,000 meters in dramatic fashion at the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship this past weekend, helping the Phoenix to a second-place finish. Beerman opened her year by finishing third at the CAA Cross Country Championship and was then the runner-up in both the mile and the 3,000 at the CAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. At the Penn Relays this spring, Beermann had a truly amazing performance, shattering the Elon school record in the 5,000 meters, winning the event in a time that ranks in the top 16 in the entire East Region this season. Beerman also holds Elon records in the 1,500 and the 3,000.
Men’s basketball player Zac Ervin and women’s track and field athlete Lauryn Carlton earned the Robert C. Browne Sportsmanship Award. The Browne Award was established in 1972 in memory of Elon alumnus Robert C. Browne by his sister, Pretto Browne-Crumpton, and her husband, Dr. J.L. Crumpton, and is presented annually to the Elon male and female athletes who have best displayed exemplary qualities of sportsmanship as determined by the Elon Department of Athletics administrative staff.
Lotte Fox of women’s golf and Cole Schilling of the Phoenix football team were co-winners of the A.L. Hook Scholar-Athlete Awards. The Hook Award has been presented annually since 1975 in honor of Dr. A.L. Hook to the Phoenix male and female junior or senior athletes who possess the highest cumulative grade-point average with a minimum of two years of playing time at Elon.
