Mustafa Akben profiled in The Burlington Times-News for artificial intelligence work

Elon's first director of artificial intelligence spoke to The Burlington Times-News about his research on artificial intelligence and how it influences his new role.

Mustafa Akben, assistant professor of management, was recently profiled by The Burlington Times-News about his research on artificial intelligence and his new role as Elon University’s first director of artificial intelligence.

Akben will lead the integration of artificial intelligence across Elon’s academic and administrative departments, building on six core principles the university helped establish last year to guide higher education institutions with a rapidly evolving and groundbreaking technology.

“I’m trying to create a psychologically safe environment, because based on my two years of AI literacy work, I’ve seen that some people feel skeptical about the use of AI, while some people feel very enthusiastic about these tools,” Akben told The Times-News. “There is a wide spectrum of responses and attitudes, and we need to listen those responses and respect and acknowledge these attitudes.”

Akben holds a Ph.D. in business administration from Temple University and has developed a range of AI-enhanced teaching tools and methodologies.
