Phoenix Five: August 25, 2024

Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley emailed highlights on Aug. 25 to help students stay informed and prepare for the week ahead.

Welcome to the Class of 2028 and new transfer students – and welcome back returning students!

This is the first edition of the “Phoenix Five” for the 2024-2025 academic year. Every Sunday afternoon, I’ll send you five quick tips, events or highlights to help you stay informed for the week ahead. This year, you’ll also spot the Phoenix Five beyond your inbox, including on the Student Life social media account, as a Today at Elon article and on digital boards around campus.

Classes start this Tuesday and here are your “Phoenix Five” tips for the week ahead:

Get Connected on Social Media

Social media can be an easy and valuable way to stay connected and informed about what’s going on at Elon. Here are my suggestions for some Elon Instagram accounts to follow so you’ll always know what’s happening at the university:

Participate in weekly campus traditions – Starting this week!

College Coffee

Tuesdays, 9:40-10:20 a.m., Phi Beta Kappa Commons, Lambert Academic Village

College Coffee is one of Elon’s most cherished traditions. This weekly campus-wide event brings Elon faculty, staff and students together to build community, foster and strengthen relationships, find out what’s happening around campus, and enjoy coffee and sweet treats. Be sure to join us each Tuesday during the break between morning classes. And if your student organization wants to host an information table at College Coffee, information to sign up can be found here.

Numen Lumen: A Thursday inspiration

Thursdays, 9:50-10:20 a.m., Numen Lumen Pavilion

Each week, the Thursday morning break between classes, provides an opportunity for reflection. Join us at the Numen Lumen Pavilion for inspiration and community connection, with music from talented student musicians and a reflection from a student, faculty, or staff member of the Elon community. This year’s theme is “Transforming Walls into Windows” and the first Numen Lumen of the year will be held this Thursday.

Fall Student Employment Fair

Wednesday, Aug. 29, 3:30 – 5 p.m.., McKinnon Hall, Moseley Center

Students are invited to attend the Student Employment Fair, which provides an opportunity for you to connect with department supervisors about job openings. A variety of Elon’s departments, from Student Life, Admissions, Athletics, and all Divisions of the University, will be represented at the fair. You are encouraged to attend, bring copies of your resume, and build relationships with possible employers. Visit the Elon Job Network (EJN) website for more information.

Fall Organization Fair

Thursday, Aug. 29, 6 – 8 p.m., Young Commons

Join Student Involvement and our over 270 clubs and organizations to learn more about what you can do on campus! Ask questions and step outside of your comfort zone by joining a student organization. Focus on a few organizations (something connected to your possible major, something fun, something new) and reevaluate your involvement after your first six weeks on campus. Remember that the Org Fair is not just for new students, returning students are also encouraged to attend as this is an opportunity to find something new.  Visit PhoenixCONNECT for more information.

Explore involvement opportunities with PhoenixCONNECT

Even after the Organization Fair, there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved at Elon. PhoenixCONNECT is the platform to learn about student organizations and groups on campus. It is also where you can find a calendar of all the organization events and activities happening around campus, open to all students. Make sure you don’t miss out on the events and activities that interest you!

Hope you get the academic year off to a great start this week!
