Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley emailed highlights on Sept. 1 to help students stay informed and prepare for the week ahead.
First week down! Hopefully, you’re enjoying the weekend and off to a good start this semester.
Be sure to take some time this week to ensure that you are registered to vote and have a plan to cast your ballot this fall. Whether you decide to vote absentee using your home address or vote locally in Alamance County, you can visit the Elon Votes! website for all the details to register to vote and/or obtain an absentee ballot. The Kernodle Center for Civic Life in Moseley Center 232 is also a great place to get information or print your voter registration and absentee ballot forms.
Here are my “Phoenix Five” tips as you plan for the week ahead:
Intramural Sports Block 1 Registration Deadline
Wednesday, Sept. 4 deadline
Intramural sports are a great way to continue your interest in organized sports. The registration deadline this Wednesday will be for 7v7 flag football, 4v4 sand volleyball, 3v3 soccer and the spikeball tournament this Friday evening. Registration is also now open through September 18 for 4v4 outdoor basketball. Visit the Campus Recreation and Wellness website for all the details on how to create a team or register as a free agent.
Joshua Lozoff, illusionist
Wednesday, Sept. 4, 7:30 p.m., Center for the Arts, McCrary Theatre
Joshua Lozoff is an entertainer, magician, mentalist and former TV and film actor. His performances combine his love for the art of magic, his fascination with psychology and the powers of observation and influence. In one moment, he makes a drawing come to life just by pointing; in the next, he predicts an audience member’s choice even before they know it themselves. An eloquent and professional performer, Lozoff is a great showman who wows the crowd. Admission is free with your Elon ID. Visit the university ticket website for advance tickets.
Elon Farmer’s Market
Thursday, Sept. 5, 3 to 6 p.m., Elon Community Church parking lot
Support local farmers, enjoy fresh seasonal produce and find unique handmade goods at the Elon Farmer’s Market. Visit the Office of Sustainability’s table for a taste test of “ugly” produce and grab a free reusable bag.
Election Student Issues Forum
Thursday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m., East Neighborhood Commons, Forum (102)
What are the issues at stake in the upcoming election that are most important to college students? How will you decide who to vote for in local, state and national races? Join other Elon students and campus experts for a non-contentious forum to learn more about what’s on the minds and hearts of Elon students during this election season. Co-sponsored by the Student Government Association and Elon News Network.
Rise Against Hunger
Saturday, September 7, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Koury Athletic Center Alumni Gym
Rise Against Hunger’s annual event at Elon University is a key initiative where students, faculty, and staff unite to package thousands of meals to combat global food insecurity, especially in areas affected by natural disasters. Sponsored by Campus Kitchen and the Kernodle Center for Civic Life, this event serves as both a flagship for Elon Volunteers! and a way to introduce newcomers to global hunger issues. For more information on how to get involved, visit the Kernodle Center for Civic Life in Moseley Center 232, contact staff at elonvols@elon.edu or visit PhoenixCONNECT.
Make it a great week!
