Sean Leavitt '93 spoke at his first TEDx talk on Aug. 23 where he spoke on the greater purpose of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workforce and beyond.
Sean Leavitt ’93 credits his Elon education for influencing his career path into diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work, eventually leaving to giving a TEDx talk this summer in Greensboro, North Carolina.
“The size and liberal arts focus of Elon was a perfect fit for me,” he explained. “The diverse experiences cultivated my critical thinking skills and helped me develop a broad, nuanced perspective that has served me well in my career.”
Leavitt currently serves as the CEO of Maclens Inclusive Leadership Group, a company he established to ensure fairness and inclusivity in the workplace: “I support leaders in achieving their goals with integrity and authenticity,” said Leavitt.
Leavitt hosted his first TEDx Talk on Aug. 23, focusing how those with privilege can be more engaged in DEI and be allies and advocates for those that are less privileged.
Leavitt urged others to use their power for good and educate themselves on the importance of acceptance and inclusion in the workplace. He pointed to research that shows people from all backgrounds should be involved in advocating for DEI because of the significant impact it can have for change.
It was his own undergraduate experiences and gratitude for the college assistance he received that led to a desire to make a difference for others. While at Elon, Leavitt was the recipient of multiple Pell Grants and loans that allowed him to attend the university as a first-generation college student.
“The financial support was critical,” explained Leavitt. “It enabled me to focus on my studies and get deeply involved on campus without juggling work and other financial burdens. Thanks to this assistance, I could take full advantage of the small class sizes, accessible professors and countless opportunities for engagement.”
At Elon Leavitt participated in intramural sports, student organizations, Greek life and did community service, all of which he feels enriched his college experience and helped him develop into a well-rounded individual and leader. He also worked as a residential assistant, helping his peers develop a strong community.
When asked how DEI has manifested in his day-to-day life and professional career, Leavitt explained that it appears in both areas equally.
“DEI has helped me see the multiple dimensions of my children and recognize the unique ways I need to support each of them as they navigate life,” said Leavitt. “In my career, it has strengthened my critical thinking, it has helped me learn empathy and better understand different perspectives and it has helped me better meet the varied needs of my employees, partners and clients.”
Since giving the TEDx talk, Leavitt realizes the importance of being an advocate and how vital it is to lead and act where needed. He says that he now recognizes his own need to unapologetically step up as an ally and advocate instead of relying on others to champion these causes.
He believes there is nothing more rewarding in his DEI work than seeing colleagues, partners and even his own children expand their apertures, unlock their potential and make a meaningful difference in the world. Elon’s emphasis on honoring its past and finding innovative ways to change the future profoundly shaped his own sense of purpose. Leavitt aspires to continue his work in helping others realize their dreams and fulfill their unique callings as leaders and human beings.
“My hope is that by using my voice and platform in this way, I can inspire more people in my community and beyond and increase their dedication to building a more just and equitable world,” said Leavitt.
