Elon offering bias education workshops to students, faculty and staff

As part of Elon’s bias response system, the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Education and Development (OIEED) offers educational opportunities.

Elon University is a place that celebrates all backgrounds, cultures, experiences and perspectives of the community. To ensure that everyone has an environment where they feel celebrated, welcomed and understood, the university is offering bias education workshops through the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Education and Development (OIEED).

Bias education (BE) workshops are regularly offered to all Elon University community members, departments and groups. BE workshops can be requested by using the Division of Inclusive Excellence request for services form. Look on the website for information about upcoming Spring 2025 workshops. Visit the OIEED website for upcoming Spring 2025 workshops.

OIEED aims to reduce identity-based bias and bias-related incidents on campus as well as workspaces. Bias-related incidents can be intentional or unintentional events (language, behaviors, etc.) motivated in whole or in part, by identity-based bias or prejudice against a person or group.

There are three themes around bias education at Elon: BE Aware, BE Accountable and BE Advocates. BE Aware can help people gain a better understanding of identifying personal bias attitudes and actions within themselves. BE Accountable can help people gain a better understanding of increasing awareness to identifying identity-based bias and how to address bias-related incidents. BE Advocates can help people gain a better understanding of the foundations of anti-bias advocacy and exploring resources and strategies to promote anti-bias.

If someone is unsure and would like more information about the process of submitting an incident, that can be found on the website here.
