Elon Votes! was recently mentioned in a Stateline report as an example of a college organization working to get information out about North Carolina's voter ID law, being enforced for the first time this election.
Elon Votes!, the non-partisan civic engagement group in the Kernodle Center for Civic Life was recently highlighted in a Stateline report on college students and voter ID laws.
The report, “College students fight barriers to casting ballots as early voting begins,” highlights the difference Gen Z voters could make in the presidential election and the 2018 North Carolina voter ID law being enforced for the first time this year. The law requires all voters to have a valid form of ID to cast their ballot, not including digital college IDs stored on cellphones, which the report notes has taken many college students by surprise.
Bo Dalrymple ’25, student coordinator for Elon Votes!, told Stateline the group has been using yard signs and posters, and talking with student groups to get the word out about the new law and how to get a free Phoenix card that complies with state law.
“There’s a lot of confusion, there’s a lot of speculation or things that you hear,” Dalrymple told Stateline. “One of our biggest jobs is just cutting through the noise and make sure that these students are informed with the correct policies and the correct rules.”
