Elon math faculty, Ryu and Trocki, present at 2024 AACU STEM Conference

Ryu and Trocki delivered the oral presentation “Fostering and Assessing Conceptual Understanding in Early STEM Courses."

Two math faculty members, Associate Professor Hwayeon Ryu and Associate Professor Aaron Trocki presented at the 2024 Transforming STEM Higher Education Conference, the annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The conference was held in Arlington, Virginia from Nov. 7 through Nov. 9.

Ryu and Trocki delivered the oral presentation “Fostering and Assessing Conceptual Understanding in Early STEM Courses.” This represents their ongoing SoTL work, which was designed to enhance students’ conceptual understanding in Calculus I courses at Elon. The team hopes to develop the curriculum materials for Calculus I and to share them with other faculty who regularly teach this course. This project has been supported by funds from the College of Arts and Sciences’ HHMI Inclusive Excellence Grant.

The AAC&U STEM Higher Education Conference aims to provide a professional development experience that advances undergraduate STEM education reform. To do so, it provides a national platform for the diverse perspectives and experiences of STEM faculty, particularly those from historically marginalized groups and institutions, to be inserted into national STEM reform discourse.
