Elon Law Associate Dean Sue Liemer invited Associate Professor Roymieco Carter and students in an upper-level advertising course at North Carolina A&T State University for a joint class that explored the impact of intellectual property law on visual design.
Undergraduate students in an advertising course at N.C. A&T State University visited with Elon Law students and faculty in January for a discussion on intellectual property law and its influence on visual art and design.
Elon Law Associate Dean Sue Liemer welcomed students studying under Associate Professor Roymieco Carter, director of the visual arts program at N.C. A&T, for an interdisciplinary lecture titled “Copyright, Trademark, Patent, and Fair Use in Contemporary Visual Art and Design.”
The Jan. 27, 2025, lecture aimed to bridge the gap between artistic expression and legal understanding. A series of professional cases and museum challenges were presented to highlight the complexities of copyright law within the art world for Elon Law students in Liemer’s “Art Law” course and A&T students in Carter’s “Advertising Design II” course.
“By bringing together art and law students early in their academic journeys, we foster a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between the rarely discussed commercial practices in art and their legal framework,” Carter said. “This cross-pollination of ideas not only enriches their educational experiences but also empowers them to recognize the breadth of professional opportunities where they will undoubtedly collaborate, shaping the future of the arts and the legal landscape.”

Following the lecture, Liemer guided the A&T students on a tour of Elon Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina, including a stop in the Cemala Foundation Commons, the Elon Law Library, and the Robert E. Long Courtroom where the N.C. Business Court hears cases.
To further enrich the interdisciplinary exchange, a reciprocal visit is being planned for Elon Law students to visit the North Carolina A&T State University campus to explore the university’s renowned art galleries and collections.
“It’s so important for the law students to hear the perspectives of creatives and appreciate where the connections and disconnects are between the arts and the law,” Liemer said.
