Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley has communicated with the campus community about changes to in-person learning and other hours of operation due to the impact of a midweek winter weather system in North Carolina.
FINAL UPDATE: Thursday, Feb. 20, at 5:50 p.m.
Message from Vice President Jon Dooley to the Elon University community
Dear students, faculty, and staff,
We plan to resume normal campus operations and class schedules tomorrow, Friday, February 21, at the Elon, Greensboro, and Charlotte campuses.
As the Facilities Management team continues to address any lingering on-campus impact from the storm, we expect conditions will continue to improve in the area. There could be some remaining slippery spots on sidewalks, parking lots, and roads, due to precipitation that melts during the day and refreezes at night, especially in shaded areas or secondary roads. Caution is advised while driving or navigating stairs or walkways that could be icy. Allow plenty of time for your regular morning commute to class or work. The university severe weather guidance provides recommendations for those individuals who might be prevented from safely traveling to campus, class, and work.
Thank you to the staff in Facilities Management, Campus Safety and Police, Elon Dining, Student Life, the Library, and Information Technology for their work to continue campus operations during the class cancellations yesterday and today. And thank you to everyone for your patience and flexibility through the unexpected disruption.
This is our last expected email update for this winter storm.

Message from Vice President Jon Dooley to the Elon University community
- Elon University in-person meetings for undergraduate and graduate classes are CANCELED at the Elon, Greensboro, and Charlotte campus locations on Thursday, February 20.
- Students should check with their instructors for further information about any alternative plans for out-of-class activities, readings, and assignments.
- University offices are closed today, except as noted below.
The band of snow has reached our region this morning and some parts of our area are experiencing more snowfall and deteriorating road conditions than others. The National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory cautions that slippery road conditions are expected, with bridges and shaded areas most at risk to maintain snow and ice cover. Drivers are cautioned to be alert and prepared for rapidly changing road conditions.
Facilities Management will continue to clear and maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways around campus. Even with those efforts, there could be slippery spots on campus, so proper footwear and winter clothing are advised when walking on campus.
Although in-person classes are canceled, later this evening the Elon Phoenix Men’s Basketball Game v. Towson University will be held as scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Schar Center.

Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 10 p.m.
Message from Vice President Jon Dooley to the Elon University community
- University opening delayed to noon for Elon and Greensboro campus locations on Thursday, Feb. 20.
- The start of undergraduate classes will be delayed until 12 noon and will be held on the revised schedule below.
- The School of Law and graduate program directors will communicate directly with students and faculty about class schedules for their respective law and graduate programs.
- University offices will open at 12 noon, except for the offices/services noted below.
- Essential/emergency personnel will be notified by your supervisor when to report to campus.
After stopping overnight, some light snow is expected Thursday morning. Any accumulated snow or ice melt from the storm is expected to refreeze, making roadways and sidewalks slick.
Facilities Management will continue to clear and maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways around campus. Even with those efforts, there could be slippery spots on campus, so proper footwear and winter clothing are advised when walking on campus and extra caution is encouraged when driving, especially tonight and Thursday morning. As temperatures rise into Thursday afternoon, we expect conditions to improve.
As noted in our severe weather guidance, faculty and staff who live some distance from campus and who might be prevented from safely traveling to campus should notify their respective dean (faculty) or supervisor (staff). Students who might be prevented from traveling safely should contact their instructors.

Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m.
Message from Vice President Jon Dooley to the Elon University community
Dear students, faculty, and staff,
As the snow makes its way across our region, the current forecast for the storm suggests we may get less snow than originally predicted. But uncertainty remains about the upper range for what we could experience in the region. University leaders continue to monitor the weather forecast and current conditions, Facilities Management will continue to clear and maintain sidewalks and campus roadways overnight, and University Police will be supporting campus safety. We are planning to communicate a decision about Thursday classes and university operations early tomorrow morning, once we have clearer information about what takes place overnight.
In the meantime, here are five things you can do to plan for what could transpire tomorrow:
- Students are advised to continue to prepare for any deadlines, assignments, presentations, or exams with the understanding they could occur as scheduled.
- In the event the university were to delay the start of classes, there is an existing published plan for how the undergraduate class schedule would be revised. Law School and graduate program leaders would communicate alternate schedules directly to the students and faculty in their respective programs, in the event of a delay.
- In the event the university were to cancel classes, faculty would have the flexibility to arrange for out-of-class activities, readings, and assignments, which could include the option for online class meetings during the regularly scheduled class time.
- In the event the university operates on the normal schedule, the Severe Weather Guide on the university website provides guidance for individual students, faculty, or staff who may live some distance from campus or whose personal circumstances would make it unsafe to come to campus.
- The early morning announcement will be made via E-Alert, with a simultaneous email message providing additional detail. Ensure your current cell phone number is updated in the E-Alert emergency notification system.
Have a great evening and expect our next update early tomorrow morning.

3:50 p.m.
- Elon University undergraduate and graduate classes at the Elon, Greensboro, and Charlotte campus locations that are currently scheduled with a start time after 12 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, Feb. 19, will not meet in-person.
- Morning classes and labs will be held as scheduled tomorrow. This announcement only affects any classes and labs that are scheduled to begin after 12 p.m. (noon), including Wednesday evening classes.
- Although the in-person meetings for afternoon and evening classes will be canceled, students should check with their instructors for further information about any alternative plans for out-of-class activities, readings, and assignments, which could include the option for online class meetings during the scheduled class time.
- University offices will close at 12 p.m. (noon) Wednesday, except as noted below.
According to the current forecast from the National Weather Service, a winter storm with a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected to impact our region. Although the most significant impact is expected in the eastern part of the state, chances are increasing that the precipitation in our area could result in hazardous driving conditions and scattered power outages, with the heaviest precipitation and impact expected Wednesday afternoon into the evening and overnight hours. Given the forecast, and out of abundance of caution, we are announcing the change to university operations now to give the community time to make plans for tomorrow afternoon and evening.
Facilities Management will be working throughout the storm to clear and maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways around campus. Even with those efforts, there could be slippery spots on campus tomorrow afternoon and evening, so as the storm passes through, proper footwear and winter clothing are advised when traversing campus and driving during the worst impacts from the storm is discouraged.
