The professor of law spoke with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about a proposed law that would make 'doxxing' illegal in the state of Georgia.
Enrique Armijo, a professor of law at Elon University, was quoted by The Atlanta Journal Constitution about a proposed law that would make “doxxing” a misdemeanor on the first offense and a felony on subsequent violations.
The bill comes after some lawmakers in December 2023 were victims of “swatting” attacks where someone calls 911 and reports a false emergency in the hopes of getting an armed police response to a person’s address.
According to the AJC, “doxxing” is defined as “maliciously publicizing private or identifying information online that would cause the victim to be in fear of mental or physical danger, monetary loss or other significant life disruptions.”
Armijo told the AJC that he’s skeptical the law and others like it would hold up under the First Amendment.
“The way out of that problem is not to basically criminalize true speech about government officials,” Armijo said.
