Finding purpose through service: Kyla Maxwell’s journey with the Kernodle Center

Maxwell says Elon's Kernodle Center for Civic Life created an environment where she could grow, lead and thrive.

Kyla Maxwell ’25 has become a familiar and inspiring presence within the Kernodle Center for Civic Life. What began as a search for connection quickly evolved into a transformative journey of leadership and service. Feeling initially disconnected from campus life, Maxwell found a true sense of belonging and purpose through her involvement with the Kernodle Center.

Throughout her time at Elon, Maxwell served as a shift coordinator for Habitat for Humanity and currently leads with distinction as the executive director of collaboration and outreach. Her commitment to civic engagement has not only shaped her Elon experience but also left a lasting impact on those around her.

Of all the memories she has made, one moment with Habitat for Humanity stands out. After completing a home build with her team, Maxwell had the opportunity to meet the future homeowner.

“It helped me realize how close our impact was,” she said. The experience deeply moved her, reinforcing the tangible difference that service can make.

Maxwell expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Kernodle Center staff, who she credits with creating an environment where she could grow, lead and thrive. Reflecting on her personal development, she highlights the leadership skills she has gained through her various roles—skills that she will carry forward into her next chapter.

“As I move on from my Elon journey, regardless of where I go, I will carry the value and impact of service with me,” she said. “Kernodle has instilled in me how service helps everyone involved.”
