In a dramatic sudden-death playoff, the Elon University Men’s Golf team clinched the 2025 CAA Championship on April 22 at Union League National Golf Course.
Thanks to eagles by Jack Wieler and Garrett Risner in a thrilling sudden-death playoff, the Elon University men’s golf team captured the 2025 CAA Championship on Tuesday afternoon, April 22, at the Union League National Golf Course.
The Phoenix posted a final-round score of 291 (+3) to force a playoff with Drexel, as both teams finished with a 54-hole total of 877 (+13). Elon secured the championship, earning its first-ever conference title at the Division I level and first overall since 1994.
Highlights
- Juan Callejo Ropero earned All-Tournament Team honors after tying for fourth with a 218 (+2). He finished the day at 1-over par, carding a team-high 13 pars and back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. Callejo Ropero led the team in par-3 scoring average (3.33), tied for the field lead with 37 total pars, and ranked second on the team in par-4 scoring average (4.03).
- Garrett Risner moved up nine spots on the individual leaderboard after leading the team with a 2-under 70 to tie for ninth. Risner played a bogey-free front nine with nine straight pars and added four birdies on the back. He sealed the championship for the Phoenix with an eagle in the playoff, chipping in from the rough behind the green.
- Jack Wieler also tied for ninth with a 54-hole total of 221 (+5). Wieler carded an eagle on hole 17 to gain momentum heading into the playoff, where he drained another eagle with an uphill third shot. He led the field in par-4 scoring average at 3.93.
- Matthew Doyle posted a 2-over 74 in his final round to finish tied for 13th. He made four birdies on the day and tied for the team lead in total birdies (13).
- Landon Durham climbed 10 spots on the individual leaderboard after carding his tournament-low 74 (+2) in the final round. He led the team with five birdies on the day, tied for the most by any Phoenix player, and finished tied for 25th.
