On September 28, 2024, Crystal Brown ’22 hosted the 8th Annual Gospel Festival in Mebane, N.C., drawing approximately 300 attendees to celebrate the legacy of the Montford Point Marines.
The Montford Point Marines were trailblazing African American men—around 20,000 in total—trained between 1942 and 1949 at Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, North Carolina, a segregated training facility. Despite facing systemic discrimination and adversity, the “Original Montford Point Marines” demonstrated unwavering courage and resilience, leaving a lasting impact on the Marine Corps and paving the way for future generations of service members.
Brown’s connection to this history runs deep. “The sacrifices of these Marines not only transformed the Marine Corps but also inspired many, including my parents, who served more than 20 years in the military,” Brown said. “Growing up surrounded by their stories of faith and perseverance, I was inspired by how God saw these brave men through their trials. Their legacy ignited a passion in me to honor their contributions and ensure their stories are never forgotten.”
This passion became the foundation for her Senior Capstone Project, where she collaborated with the National Montford Point Marine Association NC Triad/Triangle Chapter 38 to create an event celebrating and honoring these unsung heroes. That vision evolved into the annual gospel festival, featuring renowned gospel artists, including Pastor John P. Kee, Bishop Marvin Sapp and Bishop Paul Morton.
This year’s festival brought even more talent, with performances by Rev. Luther Barnes, Amya Ashe, Dennis Garner & Purpose, Rev. Matthew Mickens & The Highway Travelers, and Christian Anderson. Young gospel prodigy Caleb Serrano served as the MC, adding a vibrant energy to the event. The highlight of the evening was a surprise appearance by the “Godmother of Gospel,” Pastor Shirley Caesar.
“The support from our community has been overwhelming,” Brown said. “It fills my heart with gratitude to see us come together each year to honor the legacy of the Montford Point Marines. Their story is one of resilience, courage, and faith—values that continue to inspire us today. As we reflect on their sacrifices, we are reminded of the importance of paying tribute to those who paved the way for us.”
With the continued support of Chapter 38 and the local community, Brown is committed to keeping the spirit of the Montford Point Marines alive. “Thank you to God, Chapter 38, and everyone who has supported us over the past eight years,” she said. “Together, we celebrate the enduring legacy of these humble heroes, ensuring their contributions are always remembered.”
