Thirty students received master’s degrees in education from Elon University during Commencement exercises Saturday, Aug. 19 in Whitley Auditorium on campus.
The graduating class included teachers from eight school districts in North Carolina—Alamance-Burlington, Durham, Guilford, Person, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes and Wake. The class included two international teachers who have taught in the United States through the Visiting International Faculty (VIF) program. Based in Chapel Hill, N.C., VIF recruits international teachers for schools throughout the U.S.
June Atkinson, North Carolina state superintendent of public instruction, delivered the commencement address. She is the first woman elected to the position, after serving the department from 1976 to 2004 as a consultant and director of business education, career and technical education and instructional services. A former business education teacher, Atkinson is past president of the National Business Education Association and the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium.
Elon’s summer cohort M.Ed. program allows students to complete a master’s degree by attending three summer sessions and taking two or three online courses during the normal academic year.
