About 50 Elon football players from 1977 to 1981 (head coach Jerry Tolley’s era) gathered for a reunion that coincided with the Phoenix home football opener on Aug. 9. The players attended the launch party for the new Phoenix Club and took part in pre-game and half-time events. During the pre-game, team captains from the Tolley era accompanied current football captains on the field to witness the coin toss. At halftime, captains Bobby Hedrick, Donovan Brown and Ernie Tootoo were featured in a formal unveiling of new signs at Rhodes Stadium commemorating Elon’s 1980 and 1981 NAIA national championship teams.
