Jon Metzger, Artist in Residence and associate professor of music, has been awarded the North Carolina Jazz Education Service Award “in recognition of his excellence and commitment to jazz education in the state of North Carolina.”

Metzger will be honored at a ceremony during the UNCG Honors High School Jazz Band Concert at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 19. Metzger will also perform as part of a live recording project with the UNCG Jazz Ensemble during the concert. He will receive a plaque of recognition and a cash award. An announcement will be placed in the annual Convention Issue of the International Association of Jazz Educators Journal.

Metzger is the third recipient of this prestigious award, presented by the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program at UNCG. The previous recipients are Jim Ketch (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Ira Wiggins (NC Central University).

“I am honored to receive this award,” said Metzger. “Jim Ketch and Ira Wiggins are amazing company. I admire them tremendously for what they have done in our state and beyond. It is also very satisfying and exciting to receive this honor from my home state.”
