ELON COLLEGE – The second annual Service Learning Institute for colleges and universities involved in or considering offering service learning programs will be held Thursday, Feb. 17 at Elon College.
The one-day institute is being conducted by the North Carolina Campus Volunteers Coalition, a group of institutions that represent faculty, staff and students who are active in learning and teaching through service. The coalition is based in Elon’s Kernodle Center for Service Learning.
More than 50 representatives from colleges and universities in North and South Carolina will attend the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. meeting in Moseley Center.
The institute will feature workshops and roundtable discussions on different aspects of service learning programs, such as reflection, working with community agencies and assessment, said Kathy Manning, director of service learning at Elon.
Elon has a strong commitment to service learning. About 65 percent of its students were active in service during the 1998-99 academic year. The Kernodle Center also provides resources for faculty to integrate service into their courses.
