Elon’s Center for Public Affairs, in conjunction with the North Carolina Sentencing Services program, will present a workshop on evidence-based sex offender management from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday, May 8 in Moseley Center, located on the Elon campus.
The workshop is designed for courtroom professionals who develop sentencing plans for sex offenders, as well as community corrections officers and treatment providers who work with sex offenders. Workshop topics will include common misconceptions about working with sexual offenders, as well as treatment and management options for sex offenders. Participants will also learn about resources available to treatment professionals and sex offenders in the community and the Department of Correction.
Psychologists, social workers, therapists and court officials from across North Carolina will participate in the seminar. Lawrence Vellani, an adjunct member of Elon’s political science faculty, will be among the panelists.
Elon’s Center for Public Affairs encourages informed decision making on issues of public interest. The center works cooperatively with public, private and non-profit organizations to develop research, training and practical solutions to difficult social problems.
The workshop is free, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Anyone interested in attending the workshop should contact Karolyn Gearino with the Office of Sentencing Services at (919) 661-5839, or by e-mail at karolynge@hotmail.com.
