Elon College to name new library May 5

ELON COLLEGE – Elon College will announce the name of its $14 million library, which currently is under construction, on Wednesday, May 5. The announcement will be made at an 11 a.m. outdoor ceremony near the library site.

College officials and the person for whom the library is being named will attend the ceremony, which is open to the media.

To accommodate the ceremony, the class schedule for Wednesday will be altered. The 10 a.m. classes will meet 9:40 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. and the 11:20 a.m. classes will meet 11:40 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.. College Coffee will be held 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The 75,000-square-foot library is scheduled for completion this summer with a formal dedication planned for September. It is designed by the Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott architectural firm, a world leader in the field.

The library will incorporate the latest electronic media in a traditional library setting and will house more than 200,000 volumes and more than 200 computers. The building will offer wireless computer capabilities, multimedia and audiovisual stations and a variety of networked classrooms and collaborative spaces. The facility will house the offices of academic computing and tutoring services, the writing center, the honors and general studies programs, the faculty resource center and media services.
